The Morison Millar competition is not an MCLGA competition but many of our members enjoy representing their clubs at this special 36 hole foursomes competition each year. We are happy to provide the information below on the competition for our members' convenience and would ask that any questions about the competition be directed to the Morison Millar Committee, either by email or via their Facebook page.
See below for further details about the competition and more information about the 2025 winners.
History of the competition in brief (see Facebook for further details)
The Morison Millar Tournament came about after a brief foray by Ladies in 1927 into the prestigious Dispatch Trophy, previously assumed only to be open to men. These Ladies represented the Dormie Club and comprised a team of 3 Scottish Champions and an 8 times Dalmahoy Club Champion. There was great press interest at the time, but the rules of that particular competition were promptly changed, ensuring the Ladies could not enter again!
However, the Dormie Club’s bid for equality would not end there! It was felt that their actions had shown “a desire to engage in competitive foursomes play” and a group of 5 ladies formed a Committee to create a similar type of competition to the Dispatch Trophy, but for ladies.
Mrs Morison Millar, the first Lady to serve on Edinburgh Town Council and the daughter of Sir Robert Inches, one of the Founders of Hamilton and Inches, agreed to provide a trophy and the inaugural Competition was held on the 11th May 1928. Although not a golfer, Mrs Morison Millar always took a keen interest in the Competition, presenting the trophy every year from 1928 to 1956 with only two exceptions. A member of the family still carries out this duty to this day.
Alphabetical order was adopted for the sequence in which Clubs would host the Competition, starting with Baberton in 1929. The current trophy dates from 1979, after the original one was destroyed in a fire at Craigmillar Park, the 1978 winners.
Over ninety years this unique Competition still satisfies the original purpose of providing an opportunity for Ladies “to engage in competitive foursomes play”.
