Championship Match Play

Newbattle may 2nd 2004

Championship
Claire Hargan (Prestonfield), won the Midlothian County Championship for the second time today over Newbattle Golf Course when she beat Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse) by 3&2 in the Final. Claire won the first with a par 4, but then lost her tee-shot at the second, where Kirsten had a 3 and squared the match.. Kirsten won the third with a 3 to go one up. Claire then won the 5th with a 4 to square the match and went one up at the 8th with a birdie 2, The 9th was halved in 4, then Claire went ahead at the 10th with a 4 to Kirsten's 5. The 11th and 12th holes were halved with birdie and par 3s. Claire was bunkered after her pitch at the 13th and Kirsten won hole with a birdie 4 to bring the deficit back to one hole. At the 14th Claire had a birdie 3 to win the hole and go back to 2 up. She won the 15th with a par 4 and the match finished at the 16th as the hole was halved in 5 and Claire won by 3/2. There were 9 birdies between the two players and the best ball was six under fours.

In the morning semi-finals Claire Hargan finished with birdies at the 13th and 14th to beat Karen Marshall (Baberton) by 5/4. Fiona de Vries (St Rule) had been out in 4 under par to be 5 up, but Kirsten Blackwood held on and gradually reduced the deficit and squared the match at the 16th with a birdie 3. The 17th and 18th holes were halved, with Kirsten winning through at the 19th.

B Championship
In the B Championship Jill Ireland (Newbattle) beat Pam Townsend (Murrayfield). In a tightly contested match, Jill had never been up. She squared the match at the 17th when Pam lost her tee-shot. The 18th and 19th holes were halved and Jill then holed a put to win at the 20th. Maureen Gardner and Mary Richardson (both Craigmillar Park) were the beaten semi-finalists
