Champion of Champions FinalRoyal BurgessSunday 7th September 2003Midlothian Champion of Champions Karen Marshall (Baberton), beat Kate Rorke (Kingsknowe), on the last green of the Royal Burgess Golfing Society's course at Barnton this afternoon, to win the Midlothian Champion of Champions tournament for the first time. The large crowd of supporters were treated to an exciting match. Karen took advantage of
her opponent's unfortunate visits to the sand on every one of the first five holes
to go three up, and although Kate stopped the rot by winning the seventh when
Karen three-putted, she undid her good work by finding the front bunker at the
138 yard eighth, and missed a short putt to go back to three down. Kate's second
shot to the ninth found sand again, and with Karen safely on the green in two,
things were not looking good. However all Kate's bunker practice paid off as she
came out to four feet. Karen proceded to three-putt and Kate holed hers to walk
off the green two down at the turn. It was Karen's turn to drive into a bunker at the tenth, and Kate capitalised on her opponent's mistake and then got another one back at the twelfth, where Karen found sand again, to be all square. Karen won the 183 yard thirteenth with a pitch and putt three, but lost the 14th when she three-putted. All square with four to go, Karen won the 15th with a four and they halved the long sixteenth in fives. Karen found the green in two at the seventeenth, and was looking favorite with Kate having to chip on from the left rough. Kate's chip finished eight feet away, but Karen left her first putt outside this range, but holed her next for a four. Kate courageously followed her in, and the game went down the last with Karen one up. Karen drove the 233 yard final green, and there were gasps from the crowd as Kate's tee shot bounced off the roof of the old SGU building and back into play. Her valiant chip finished ten feet away, but Karen, with two for the match, proceded to hole her 30 foot putt for a two to win. . The game was played in excellent sportsmanship and both players appreciated the opportunity to play the Royal Burgess Golf Course. Thanks to the Royal Burgess for granting courtesy of the course and to the Ladies Golf Centre of Edinburgh for their sponsorship of this competition. The beaten semi-finalists in this competition were Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse) and Mo Cunningham (Newbattle)
