December 18 - Winter Foursomes. Rona Hunter and Jill lothian won their foursomes at Liberton with a hole in 1 at the 17th.

This started in November with each squad having a 'Train your Golf Brain' session with Scott Dixon at Dalmahoy. They enjoyed his different approach to golf.

Sally Watson has been selected for the 15 strong LGU training squad. They are preparing for team events including the Vagliano Trophy which is at Fairmont St. Andrews on 27th and 28th July 2007.

October 28 - A Midlothian Junior Team and guests enjoyed a friendly but very competitive greensomes match against a team of County Squad members and their guests on Sunday at Broomieknowe Golf Course. Well done to the Juniors on winning by 3 games to 2. Thank you to Ellice, Midlothian's new Captain for organising the match and to Broomieknowe for being given courtesy of the course.

October 24 - Midlothian held its AGM at Liberton Golf Club. Retiring Captain, Maggie McPherson, was thanked for her enthusiasm and contributions to the work of the County and presented with her past captain's badge. Ellice Cackett was elected Captain and Tracy Laughland Vice Captain. The other Office Bearers continue in post. After the AGM the President, Sue Caton, presented the prizes to the winning Ladies and Girls.Claire Hargan, County Champion gave a vote of thanks in 'rhyme' to Captain Maggie and to President, Sue Caton.

October 23 - Kate Rorke, Our Selector and Kingsknowe Member has asked that we thank everyone who sponsored her 'Moonwalk' back in June. She would like to say
"thanks to everyone for their generous sponsorship I raised £537.50 to which the Royal Bank added £500 - which was great. The money raised was split between The Breast Cancer Institute for Research and Maggies Centres for Cancer Care."
Kate has no photos for the website - She did have a beautifully decorated bra which was not on view much at all as it was cold - especially at Silverknowes at 4.15am. The golf course was empty at the time but Kate says she couldn't manage to jump the fence for a few holes of golf.

October 21 - A reminder to all Midlothian Members - The Annual General Meeting and Prizegiving will be held at Liberton Golf Club on Tuesday Ocotber 24th at 7.30pm. We hope to see you there.

October 17 - Sally Watson won the Daily Telegraph Juniors Masters at Dubai Creek and Yacht Club. Sally had rounds of 71, 68, 71 for an excellent total of 210 to finish 10 shots clear of the second group, which included Roseanne Niven from Crieff. 210 - S Watson (Elie and Earlsferry) 71, 68, 71. 220 - E Givens (Blackwell Grange) 69, 78, 73; R Niven (Crieff) 71, 73, 76; B Harries (Haverfordwest) 74, 69, 77. Well done Sally - a wonderful achievement.

October 15 - Congratulations to Ruth Brown, Scottish Seniors Stroke-play Champion; Fiona de Vries, Scottish Seniors Match-play Champion and Claire Hargan, County and East of Scotland Champion who all qualified to play in the SLGA Champion of Champions at Glasgow Gailes on Sunday 15 October. Congratulations to Elaine Moffat, Fife County Champion, who won the event with an excellent score of 73.

October 12 - The Biennial Captain's Dinner was held at Baberton Golf Club on Thursday 12th October and attended by Honorary Members, Past Captains, Committee Members and members of the County Squad. Guest Speaker, Ethel Jack gave an entertaining and amusing speech and everyone had a most enjoyable evening. (some photos are available - if you have more then send them to Janet Wake)

October 6 - The Captain and Vice Captain represented Midlothian County Ladies at the Scottish Universities Golfing Society Centenary Celebrations. A golf match, for SUGS members and guest clubs was played over Gullane No.1 and a celebration dinner was held at the New Club, Princes Street. Thank you to SUGS for the warm welcome at both events.

October 1st - East of Scotland Championship at Stirling Golf Club - SS 73 CSS 73 Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) won the East of Scotland Championship with an excellent score of 70, two shots ahead of Heather MacRae (Dunblane) and Alison Davidson (Stirling). The handicap was won by Vicki Stevenson (Stirling) with a net score of 70. Vicki won on the better inward half from Mandy Easton (Dalmahoy). The Team Trophy was won by Stirling & Clackmannan with Midlothian runners-up.

September 20 - Bronze Hole and Hole Winner for 2006 - Congratulations to Avril Robertson who beat Muriel Westwood in the Final of the Bronze Hole and Hole Competition.

New Course Record at Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club - Congratulations to Noreen Fenton who set a new course record score of 64 in the Autumn Meeting at Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club. Noreen reduced her handicap to 1.6. The previous course record at Merchants was 66, held by Linda Caine since June 1991. Noreen is a member of the Scottish Senior International team for the Senior Home International matches at Hamilton from 3 to 5 October.

Silver Hole and Hole The Final of the Silver Hole & Hole will be between Carol Fulton (Ratho Park)and Rita Dee(Kingsknowe). Have a good game. Semi-Final Results: Carol Fulton (Ratho Park) beat Fiona Hume (Liberton) and Rita Dee (Kingsknowe) beat Christine Clarke (Deer Park) Congratulations to all the players who reached this stage of the competition

With regret we note the death of Jess Smith, Honorary member of Midllothian County Ladies. Jess was a past captain and honorary member of Baberton, a past captain of Dalmahoy and, for many years, Secretary of Comiston Ladies.

Another record for Rachael Spurred on by a course record 69 in the East of Scotland Girls Autumn Meeting at Kilspindie on Sunday, Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old Course) had another record-breaking 69 at Lothianburn in the Midlothian Autumn Meeting on Monday.

September 4th - The MCLGA Autumn Meeting was played at Lothianburn. Midlothian members enjoyed the course, which was in excellent condition. Although a strong wind prevailed, the Trophy winners, Rachael Livingstone and Jennifer Aitken, recorded excellent scores. Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old) won the Lady Ford Cup with the best Scratch score of 69 (Congratulations to Rachael on achieving a Course Record). Jennifer Aitken (Mortonhall) won the McIntrye Trophy with the best overall net score of 64. (LGU SS 70, CSS 72) (Results)

September 3rd - Many congratulations to Fiona de Vries, Midlothian member on winning the Scottish Senior Ladies Championship at Machrihanish. In the 18-hole, final Fiona, who had qualified in fifth place from the stroke-play section of the four-day programme, beat Helen Faulds (Douglas Park) by 4 and 3. In the morning semi-finals, Mrs Faulds had beaten the defending champion Pamela Williamson (Baberton) by one hole. All three seeds in the match-play stages, Ruth Brown (Lothianburn), winner of the stroke-play championship on Friday, Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) and Lynne Terry (Cruden Bay), were knocked out in the first round in very wet conditions on Saturday morning. Lorna Bennett won the consolation match-play tournament, beating Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) by one hole in the final.
Ruth Brown is to be congratulated on winning the Scottish Senior Ladies Strok-play Championship. Ruth had 81 in the first round and an excellent two-over-par 74 – easily the best round of the championship, for a 36-hole total of 155. She won her the title by one shot from Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) who had a 79 for 156.
Congratulations also to Fiona de Vries (St Rule), Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh), and Pamela Williamson (Baberton) on their selection for the Senior Ladies Home Interational Team Matches at Hamilton from October 3-6. Do go to Hamilton if you can and support the Scottish team.

September 3rd -

Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) beat Jane Turner (Glencorse) at the fourteenth hole of the Royal Burgess Golf Course at Barnton this afternoon to win the Antonio Vase and the Midlothian Champion of Champions tournament for the second year in a row.

A good crowd of supporters watched an excellent game. Claire's very consistent golf was the key to her victory. Congratulations to both players on the standard of golf which they played in a sporting and friendly match.

Congratulations to County squad member, Jane Gibson (Williamson) who has just had a baby boy. All are doing well and the baby is called Benjamin Hamish.

Amanda Edward's score of 67 in the Captain's Day Competition at Liberton is a course record.

Girls' British Open Championship - Sally Watson reached the final of the British Girls Open at Portstewart. It was a close and exciting final with Sally just losing by one hole to Belen Mozo (Spain).
Girls International Matches Rachael Livingstone and Sally Watson - were members of the Scottish Girls' team, which won the Girls Home Internationals. It was a fantastic victory. Well done to all the girls and the Captain, Jenny Jenkins.
Strathtyrum Trophy Karen Marshall had a record third title win in the Strathtyrum Trophy - the five-day women's open tournament organised by the St Andrews Links Trust - with a 4 and 2 win over Chris Appleby from Preston in the final. Karen's previous wins were in 1997 and 2003. She was the No 2 qualifier for the match-play stages this year. Karen had wins against fellow squad members, Louise Fraser in the quarter-finals and Rebecca Watson in the semi-finals.

August 23 - 5 A-side News and Results
Thanks to everyone who helped to organise the matches. I hope that everyone enjoyed their games. There was an exciting finish to both divisions. The game points in division were very close for most of the teams. Due to the lovely weather, none of the matches needed rearranged. Results

August 16 - The East of Scotland Championship will be played at Stirling Golf Club on Sunday October 1st 2007 18 holes stroke play with Tee Times from 10 am. The Competition is open to all East Division County Members (with entries restricted to 42). Entries (entry form) should be sent to Mrs Anna Hunter, 22 Muirhead Road, Stenhousemuir, Larbert FK5 4JA. Entry Fee £8 with cheques made payable to S&CCLGA. Please enclose with your cheque an envelope addressed to your Handicap Secretary. The closing date for entries is September 3rd 2006. August 7 - Jane Turner [Glencorse] will play Claire Hargan [Mortonhall] in the Final of the Midlothian Champion of Champions Tournament on Sunday Sept 3rd at 12 noon at The Royal Burgess Golf Course. Congratulations to both and we look forward to a good game in the final

July 21 - Home International Girls' Team announced - Congratulations to Rachael Livingstone who was named in the team for the girls' home international matches at Portstewart Golf Club, Northern Ireland from August 9 to 11 Other team members Carly Booth(Comrie), Megan Briggs(Kilmacolm),Krystle Caithness (St Regulus), Kelsey MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar), Roseanne Niven (Crieff), Michelle Thomson ( McDonald Ellon) Sally Watson (Elie & Earlsferry).
Rachael was also named as a reserve for the team of three girls who will represent Scotland in the international team event staged in conjunction with the qualifying rounds of the Girls' British Open at Portstewart Golf Club from August 14 to 18. June 10th and 11th - North beat title-holders East 2-1 in the final of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association’s girls’ inter-division tournament on a gloriously sunny day Ballumbie Castle, near Dundee. East won their semi-final 3-0 against the West, but unfortunately lost in the Final to the North. Well played all girls (Detailed results)


June 2nd - MCLGA v SUGS at Gullane.
Margaret McPherson, MCLGA Captain, presented the Scottish Universities
Golf Society Captain with a quaich to celebrate SUGS first centenary. The match between Midlothian Ladies and SUGS
is the second oldest match on the SUGS calendar.. it started 76 years ago, and the 58th encounter, played tonight,
was drawn with two matches each and one halved. (Results)

May 29th The match between Captain Neil Patrick's team and a MCLGA squad team was played at Mortonhall on May 26th. Unfortunately, Mortonhall proved too strong and recorded a 3-1 win (Results).

May 24th - Results of Midsummer Foursomes and qualifiers for Commonwealth Spoons Scottish Final

May 21st - Midlothian at the Scottish Ladies' (Close) Amateur Championship, May 16-20, 2006
21 members of Midlothian went to Dunbar to play in the 'Scottish'. All 82 competitors enjoyed a superb week. The weather was kind for the qualifying and some great scores were posted including a new course record 65 from Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) and a 68 from Heather Macrae (Dunblane New).
At the conclusion of the stroke-play Wendy Nicholson won the Lyon Salver for the lowest nett score in the second qualifying round and the McInnes Shaw Cup for the lowest nett score for two qualifying rounds (with two gross scores of 73, both playing to the standard scratch) (Wendy is now in equal 7th place in the P&W SLGA Ladies Rankings.). Baberton (Pamela Williamson & Karen Marshall) won the scratch team prize (Eglinton Quaich) and Merchants (Linda Caine & Noreen Fenton) won the nett team prize (Grainger Cup). Karen Marshall won the Baby Quaich for the lowest gross score (74) in the Eglinton Quaich. Cara Easton (the only Midlothian junior able to play in the competition - the others all had examination commitments) is to be congratulated on her two rounds of 84 (both below her handicap). Cara just missed qualifying for the consolation event by two strokes.
10 Midlothian players - Kirsten Blackwood, Wendy Nicholson, Noreen Fenton, Claire MacDonald, Tracy Laughland, Claire Hargan, Belinda Murphy, Hilary Laughland, Pamela Williamson, and Karen Marshall were among the 32 qualifiers for the Championship match-play. 4 players - Ruth Brown, Karen Ballantyne, Rhona MacLennan and Mandy Easton qualified for the consolation match-play (Clark Rosebowl).
On Thursday for the first two rounds of the match-play there was a strong south-westerly wind, which made putting very difficult at some holes. The Midlothian players all faced top-class opposition with Kirsten Blackwood getting through to the 2nd round and Hilary Laughland to the quarter finals, where she took Louise Kenney to the 20th hole. In the Clark Rosebowl Ruth Brown and Mandy Easton both got through to the semi-finals.
Emma Fairnie (Dunbar) is to be congratulated on winning the Clark Rosebowl after beating Donna Pocock (Murcar) in the Final.
The Championship semi-finalists were Heather Macrae, Martine Pow, Anne Laing and Louise Kenney, with Martine and Anne getting through to the Final after very closely contested games. On Saturday morning in a very cold and trick north-easterly wind Martine Pow came through to beat Anne Laing and to win her first Scottish Ladies Championship. Well done Martine.
At the prize-giving various Scottish teams were announced and Claire Hargan was named reserve for the Danish International Women's Amateur Championship and Hilary Laughland second reserve for the Irish Women's Open Amateur Stroke-Play championship.

May 15th - The draw for the MCLGA Midsummer Foursomes at Liberton on Tuesday May 23rd

May 5th - A squad practice match between Duddingston and Midlothian Ladies was played at Duddingston on a beautiful sunny evening. The games were closely contested and played in a friendly spirit. The result was a halved match.

May 2nd - Congratulations to Fiona Hunter ( Prestonfield) and Betty Watt (Baberton) who have won the Winter Foursomes. They beat Carol Fulton (Ratho Park) and Frances Sorlie (Ratho Park) in a closely contested final.

April 30th - Claire Hargan (Mortonhall) [pictured left] won the Midlothian women’s county golf championship for the fourth time in a row at Duddingston Golf Club today. Claire, the No 3 seed, had to go to the 19th before she beat clubmate Belinda Murphy in the final. Claire birdied the ninth to be out in one-over-par 38 and three up. Belinda fought back to square the match with a birdie 2 at the short 14th. After three successive halves, Claire had the chance to win the title at the 18th but she missed a 3ft birdie putt. At the first extra hole, Claire got home with two cracking shots into a slight breeze at this par-5, 471yd hole but she did not have to putt. Belinda was in the rough and eventually conceded the hole, the match and the title.
Belinda played 38 holes in all during the day, having gone to the 19th to beat Wendy Nicholson (Broomieknowe) at the 19th in the morning semi-finals. Claire won by one hole against the second seed, Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) in the other tie.

 

The B Championship was won by young Cara Easton (Dalmahoy). She beat Gail MacDonald (Turnhouse) by 5 and 4 in the final. In the semi-finals Gail beat Gillian Cartter (Broomieknowe) by 4 and 3. Cara beat Rachael Watton (Mortonhall) by 4 and 3. [Pictured right - Gail MacDonald and Cara Easton.]

April 28th 2006 - In the MCLGA County Championship semi-finals on Sunday April 30th at Duddingston Wendy Nicholson will play Belinda Murphy and Claire Hargan will play Noreen Fenton. Tee-off times are 9 am for the semi-finals and 2 pm for the final (results from the first and second round ties)(some photos from first round ties). In the B Championship semi-finals, also on Sunday April 30th at Duddingston, Gillian Carter will play Gail MacDonald and Cara Easton will play Rachael Watton(results from B Championship first and second round ties).

April 26th - MCLGA Championship Match-Play Draw and B Championship Match-Play Draw.
The Match play for the County Championship and B Championship is at Duddingston on Friday April 28th and Sunday April 30th at 9 am and 2 pm on both dates. Do come along and watch and support the players.

April 25th - MCLGA Championship Qualifying at Duddingston over 36 holes
Claire MacDonald (Gullane) was the leading qualifier with a total of 156 (80, 76). Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) was 2nd qualifier on 157 (better 2nd round) from Claire Hargan, the defending champion. Tracy Laughland on 159 was 4th qualifier. Conditions were difficult with a testing wind which became stronger in afternoon round.

April 20th - Draw for Championship Qualifying at Duddingston on Tuesday April 25th 2006 published

April 16th - Midlothian win the Cuthbertson Cup. .
The Midlothian Team of Rachael Livingstone, Rachael Archibald, Cara Easton and Jane Turner (pictured left) played well as a team and also played great golf to win the Cuthbertson Cup at Broomieknowe today. In the morning the team beat East Lothian by 3.5 matches to 0.5; and in the afternoon they beat Fife by 2.5 to 1.5. Fife were the runners up and East Lothian and Stirling and Clackmannan tied in third place.

April 16th - Congratulations go to Rachael Archibald, Cara Easton and Rachael Watton on their selection to play for the East of Scotland in the Scottish Girls Inter-Divisional Matches at Ballumbie Castle Golf Club on June 10-11 2006. April 13th - Members of Midlothian Girls Development Squad had a fun day out at Kirriemuir Golf Club when they attended for a coaching session with Karyn Dallas. (Click here for details and pictures)

April 10th - MCLGA Spring Meeting - Wendy Nicholson (Broomieknowe) won the Cormack Salver for the best Scratch score at the Spring Meeting at Mortonhall with a score of 72. The best net overall score was also by Wendy Nicholson who had a net 67. MCLGA. LGU SS 73, CSS 76 - Results.

April 9th - The squad practice match between Midlothian and Lanarkshire was played at Harburn Golf Club on S a bright but cold day. The teams played greensomes - the games were closely contested with Midlothian going ahead in the last match on the course to win 3 -1 overall. The Junior girls played foursomes in the first game and Stableford in the second Lanarkshire won the foursomes and Jenny Potter won the Stableford with 24 pts. Well played both teams. (Results)

March 26th - The first squad practice match of 2006 was played between Midlothian and Borders at Newbattle on Sunday 26 March. The teams played greensomes. The games were closely contested and played in a friendly spirit. The Junior girls also played greensomes and had an enjoyable match. Both games resulted in wins for Midlothian

March 7 - Cuthberston Cup Team for 2006. The competition, played between the Counties of Midlothian, East Lothian, Fife and Stirling & Clackmannan, will be held at Broomieknowe G.C on Sunday 16th April. Midlothian play East Lothian in the morning singles. Fife play Stirling and Clackmannan.
First Tee-Time 10.30am. Winners play each other in the afternoon. Afternoon play starts at 3.00pm. Please do come along to support our girls' team.

March 4 - Midlothian Ladies looking for Memorabilia for their Centenary Celebrations
Do you have photographs, press cuttings or any other information relating to Ladies' Golf and, in particular, to Midlothian County Ladies?
Midlothian, along with eight other Scottish County Golf Associations, will celebrate its Centenary in 2009. The Midlothian Centenary Committee is planning events to celebrate the occasion. Possibilities include:- a special golfing event for county members; a lunch (put 17th January 2009 in your diary now!); hosting the County Finals (already agreed with SLGA); and matches or an event with other counties.
The Committee are currently collecting information for the Centenary book. Please search through your albums, papers, records, archives for any photographic or other material which we could use to illustrate it. Also if you have any memories, stories or anecodes of past events and/or players then we would be delighted to hear from you. We would be delighted to receive whatever you have... even if you think it is not important, it could be important to us! Either email us and we can arrange to collect it, or bring it to one of the County meetings and a member of the Centenary Committee will gratefully receive it. Anything that you give us will be copied and returned. We look forward to hearing from you.
