October 13th - The bi-ennial Captain's Dinner was held on Wednesday October 13th 2004 at the Merchants of Edinburgh Golf Club and attended by Honorary Members, Past Captains, Committee Members and Members of the County Squad. Maureen McKerrow was the guest speaker and gave a very amusing and entertaining speech and a good time was had by one and all (Photographs).
October 10th - Well done Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old Course), who won the girls' title in the Bank of Scotland Junior Masters' Grand Final over the Queen's Course at Gleneagles Hotel. Rachael (handicap 5) who gained her first Scotland cap in the girls' home internationals at Strathaven in August, won the girls' title with the very good total of 40pt. She had a gross score of 75 with halves of 40 and 35 to win by 7pt from Katy McNicoll (Carnoustie Caledonia Ladies), who plays off five.

October 3 - Congratulations to Joan and Karen Marshall on their win in the The 2004 Gibson Challenge Cup, played over Braids No. 1 golf course on 2nd/3rd October. In a closely contested Final against Sheila McEwen and Janet Graham ( Harburn), the Baberton pair were taken all the way to the 18th hole. The outcome was only decided when Karen Marshall hit an outstanding approach to the blind 18th green only some 10 feet from the hole ensuring a lag putt would result in a win.
East of Scotland Championship at Ladybank on September 26th. Former Scottish women's champion Elaine Moffat (St Regulus) pipped another past national title-holder Lynn Kenny (Stirling University) for the East of Scotland women's golf championship at Ladybank Golf Club, Fife on Sunday. Both players scored 77 (one over the CSS of 76) in windy conditions. Edinburgh-based Miss Moffat won the title with a better inward half of 36 to Miss Kenny's 40. Lynn, reaching the turn in 37, had been four strokes ahead of her rival at that point. Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse) was third, only one shot behind on 78. Fife (Elaine Moffat, Krystle Caithness, Fiona Lockhart and Jo Carthew) won the team event with a total of 236, three shots ahead of runners-up Midlothian. Margaret Tough (Falkirk), playing off 5, and Cecilia MacIntyre (Craigmillar Park), (handicap 11), headed the net returns on the 74 mark. Margaret took the top prize with a better net score for the last six holes. (Scores)
September 23rd - Congratulations to Pamela Williamson (Baberton) who finished joint eighth in the British senior women's open amateur golf championship over the Portstewart Golf Club links, Northern Ireland on Thursday. Pamela had rounds of 87, 83 and 83 in conditions that were bad enough for the three days to give a daily non-counting CSS three strokes above the par of 73 for the 5,965yd course.
September 23rd - Sally Watson (Elie and Earlsferry & Murrayfeild) has won the 2004 East of Scotland Girls' Order of Merit at her first attempt.13-year old Sally amassed 50 points from taking first scratch prize in the EoS Girls' Summer and Autumn Meetings and winning the EoS Girls' Championship at Kingsknowe in July. Runner-up was Amanda Edwards (Liberton) with 43 points. The Gifford Trophy for the best two net scores out of three in the East of Scotland Girls' Meetings was also won by Sally Watson with a total of three under par. Runner-up was her sister, Rebecca, who played to her handicap in both the competitions she entered.
September 12th - Congratulations toAmanda Edwards of Liberton who won the Brown Trophy and the Midlothian Junior Girls Championship today at Turnhouse with a very good scratch score of 80, on the better inward half from the runner-up, Rachael Livingstone of Musselburgh Old who also had a scratch 80. Fourteen girls with handicaps ranging from 4 to 36 played in the competition in a very strong wind. All the competitors deserved a prize for playing and completing 18 holes of golf in very testing conditions. MCLGA was grateful for the courtesy of the course and the support of family and friends and MCLGA Committee members, who came out to watch the players and ball-spot. Results.
September 9th - Congratulations to Sally Watson, Junior/Girl member of MCLGA. who broke the Murrayfield course record in the medal today - Sally had a 69 (4 under par and the CSS) and reduced her handicap to 2.8
September 7th -MCLGA greatly appreciated being granted the courtesy of the course for their Autumn Meeting at Prestonfield today. The sun shone and there was a light easterly wind. Those of the players who went into the rough found the going difficult and this showed in some of the scores (SSS 73, CSS 75). There were, however, some very good scores. Claire Hargan (Prestonfield) won the Lady Ford cup for the best Scratch Score with a 74 and Fiona de Vries won the second scratch with a 77. The McIntyre Trophy for the best net score was won by Elizabeth Smith (Murrayfield) with a net 71 with the best last 6 holes, from Marge Gammie (Ratho Park), who also had a net 71.(Results)
September 6th - Draw for the East of Scotland Championship at Ladybank now available (full draw)
September 5th - Liz Stewart (Greenburn), beat Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh), at the thirteenth hole of the Royal Burgess Golfing Society's course at Barnton this afternoon, to win the Antonio Vase and the Midlothian Champion of Champions tournament for the first time. A good crowd of supporters were treated to an excellent game.(Details and pictures)
September 5th - Congratulations to Noreen Fenton (Merchants) and Pamela Williamson (Baberton) on their selection for the Scottish Senior Ladies' Team for the Home Internationals in October. Congaturlations also on their performance in the recent Scottish Senior Ladies' Championship at Southerness played in extremely windy conditions.
September 1st - The results of the 2004 Midlothian Inter-Club League Division One matches are now available. Division 1 winners are Baberton, who win the Macfarlane Trophy for the third year in a row. The Division Two winners are Craigmillar Park who win the Thomson Trophy. (Results and details)
September 1st - The finalists in the MCLGA Summer Silver Hole and Hole Singles Competition are Fiona Hume (Liberton) and Avril Robertson (Murrayfield). The beaten semi finalists were Gillian Carter (Broomieknowe and Joy Balfour (Murrayfield). Well played Ladies throughout the season.
Gibson Cup - The Gibson Challenge Cup provides a wonderful opportunity to play foursomes golf and compete in one of the oldest golf tournaments for ladies in the Edinburgh area. This year's competition is being held over the weekend of Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd October so if your diary is free that weekend, do find yourself a partner and enter (details).
August 22nd -In brilliant sunshine Girl Members of MCLGA and their Relatives enjoyed a two-ball foursomes competition over 9 holes on the Princes Golf Course. This was followed by skills tests on Driving, Chipping and Putting held at the Braid Hills Golf and Driving Range. The event was held in recognition of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association Centenary and to acknowledge the support given by the SLGA. In addition MCLGA wished to show appreciation of the co-operation given by Edinburgh Leisure and the Braid Hills Golf and Driving Range in helping MCLGA to provide coaching and golfing opportunities for Junior Girls. August 15 - Claire Hargan (Prestonfield), won the Riccarton Rosebowl 36-hole women's open in a tight finish at Hamilton Golf Club today. Claire shot rounds of 75 and 70 (against the CSS of 74 and 73) for a final total of 145 - one shot ahead of Louise Kenney (Pitreavie) and Lynn Kenny (Stirling University).
August 9-13 - St Andrew Links Trust women's open Strathtyrum Trophy Tournament Final Stroke-Play Rounds. Baberton were well represented with Karen Marshall finishing in third place on 153. Pamela Williamson finished on 156 and Joan Marshall on 160.
August 11-13 - Girls Home Internationals at Strathaven. Rachael Livingstone and Sally Watson making their debut in the Scottish team played 3 and 4 times respectively, each winning one of their matches. Although English, Irish and Welsh teams proved too strong, the young Scottish team played well and will have gained great experience for the future
August 10 - St Andrew Links Trust women's open Strathtyrum Trophy Tournament Qualifying rounds. Rebecca Watson (Murrayfield and Elie & Earlsferry Ladies), tied in second place on the 154 mark. Rebecca had two great round on the Eden and New Courses of 76 and 78 and reduced her handicap from 10 to 6. Well done Rebecca. Karen Marshall (Baberton) also tied on 154 and qualified along with Joan Marshall (Baberton) and Pamela Williamson (Baberton) for the match-play stages. Due to the adverse weather conditions this was changed to a further two rounds of match-play for the qualifiers.
August 4-6 - British Girls Championship at Lanark. Sally Watson (Murrayfield) was involved in a seven-way tie for three places in the main Championship match play. She did not make it and qualified in second place for the second flight (the Todd Bowl).l She beat Scottish girls international team-mate Clare-Marie Carlton (Fereneze) by one hole in the first round and then had a good 4 and 2 victory over Monique Huijsman (Netherlands) in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately Sally lost in the semi-final. It was a great performance in a very strong international field which had 11 Spanish players qualifying for the championship match-play.
August 5th - Scotland completed a hat-trick of title wins in the Veteran Women's Inter-area golf championship at Strathmore Golf Centre, Perthshire. Led by Captain Joan Marshall, the squad finished with a 100 per cent record, signing off with a 6-3 win over North following earlier victories over South (5-4) and Midlands (5-4) to keep the Miller Stirling Trophy for another year. The final set of matches was reduced to singles only following a 4hr suspension for bad weather on Wednesday. Karen Ballantyne (Craigmillar Park), Noreen Fenton (Merchants of Edinburgh) and Pamela Williamson (Baberton) were members of the team.
August 3rd - The Midlothian Regional (County) Final for the SLGA Centenary Stableford Competition was held at Kingsknowe Golf Course today. The weather held up and there were some excellent scores. Corinne Alexander (Bronze Section & Kingsknowe) (handicap 22) scored 43 points; Amanda Edwards (Junior Section & Liberton) (handicap 4) had a gross 73 and scored 39 points; while Ann McGill (Silver Section & Baberton) (handicap 13) scored 38 points (Results)
July 29-30 - BP Scottish Under 21 Girls Open Amateur Strokeplay Championship at Kirkcaldy Golf Club. Winner: Claire Queen (Drumpellier) on 212 ( 69 73 70). July 22-23 -
13 year old Sally Watson (Murrayfield and Elie and Earlsferry), won
the East of Scotland Girls Championship at Kingsknowe in a top class final that
could not have be rivalled in the adult arena. Her opponent, 17 year old Amanda
Edwards of Liberton, played some super golf herself, but could not get the
better of her younger opponent. The final result was 2 and 1.
Sally and Amanda
had 76's and tied for the best scratch at the East of Scotland Girls Summer Meeting
on July 22. New Scottish Girls' cap Sally won on the better inward half, and also
won the RBoS/Daily Telegraph qualifier, with a chance to go forward to the National
Finals at Sun City, South Africa in October.
July 20th - Amanda Edwards (Liberton) won the Summer Meeting at Murrayfield today playing to scratch. Amanda won the Dumayne bowl for the best net score - 73 (5) 68; and she also won the Corstorphine Salver for the best scratch score, beating Pamela Williamson on the better inward half. Pamela Townsend (Murrayfield) was the second overall best net winner with 82(13) 69. SS 73, CSS 73. (Results)
July 16th - Rachael Livingstone and Sally Watson have been selected by the SLGA for Scottish Team for the Girls Home International Matches at Strathaven from August 11th -13th . Jane Turner is a reserve. Congratulations to all three. Sally Watson has also been named third reserve for the SLGA Team for the Girls' British Open Championship at Lanark from August 4th -8th
July 15th - BP Scottish Girls Championship match play. Sally Watson was beaten in the quarter-finals by KylieWalker. Rachael Livingstone won her quarter final in the morning, and lost to Krystle Caithness at the 18th in the afternoon semi-final. Great golf from both Rachael and Sally. The Final will be played by last year's finalists, Krystle and Kelly Brotherton.
July 14th -BP Scottish Girls Championship match-play. Amanda Edwards, Rachael Livingstone, Jane Turner, Rebecca Watson and Sally Watson all progressed from the first to the second round. Rachael and Sally were successful in the afternoon and made it through to the quarter finals. Well played everyone.
July 13th - BP Scottish Girls Championship qualifying rounds were held at at Pumpherston Golf Club (CSS 71 72) Five Midlothian Girls have qualified for the match-play stages (Scores)
| East Division Inter-County Matches June 28-30th - Fife retained the East Division Women's County Team championship at Mortonhall Golf Club. Fife finished with an impressive 100 per cent record, following up 8 1/2-1/2 wins over both Stirling & Clackmannan and East Lothian with a 7-2 victory over Midlothian. Stirling & Clackmannan drew 4 1/2-4 1/2 with East Lothian in the match between past champions but, on this occasion, fighting to avoid the wooden spoon. Stirling & Clackmannan finished third (Detailed Results for all three days). The Midlothian team (pictured on the right here) finished second. They won against East Lothian, halved with Stirling and Clackmannan, and lost to Fife. All of our the team members played really well and showed tremendous team spirit. If only more of our putts had dropped! Draw for the MCLGA Summer Meeting at Murrayfield on July 20th published
June 29th - On the second day of the East Division Inter-County Matches Fife continued in strong form, beating East Lothian by 8.5 to 0.5. Stirling and Clackmannan and Midlothian halved their match with 4.5 games apiece. The decider is tomorrow when Midlothian play Fife - either team can still win.
June 28th - On the first day of the East Division Inter-County Matches held at Mortonhall Golf Club - Fife beat Stirling and Clackmannan by 8.5 to 0.5 (a number of the games were closer than the result implies) and Midlothian beat East Lothian by 5 to 4 in a close and tightly fought contest.
Monday June 28th to Wednesday June 30th - Our County Team are playing in the East Division Inter-County Matches at Mortonhall Golf Club. We play East Lothian on Monday; Stirling & Clackmannan on Tuesday; and Fife on Wednesday. Tee-off times for Midlothian are 09:30 (foursomes) and 14:15 (singles). Do come along, give your support and encourage your team.
June 27th - Congratulations to sisters Sally and Rebecca Watson who completed a unique double today. Sally (aged 12) won the Murrayfield Ladies Club Championship by 5&4 and sister Rebecca (aged 15), not to be outdone, won the Murrayfield Junior Club Championship by 7&6.
June 21 - Three Junior Girls have been members of the MCLGA County Squad for 2003-2004. Amanda Edwards (Liberton), Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old) and Jane Turner (Glencorse). Jane Turner is first reserve for the Midlothian County Team. All three Girls have won their Ladies Club Championships - Amanda for the third year in a row; Rachael and Jane both for the first time. Congratulations all three.

June 16 - Remember there is still time to enter for the MCLGA Summer Meeting which will be held at Murrayfield Golf Course on Tuesday July 20th 2004. All MCLGA members (except Associates) and Junior Girl Members with handicaps of 20 or less are welcome to play. The closing date for entries is July 9th 2004.
June 16 - Congratulations to Amanda Edwards, Rachael Livingstone, Jane Turner and Sally Watson who have been selected, along with eight others, for the Scottish School Girls Squad of twelve from whom the team of six will be chosen to compete in the schools international match against England at Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club on Monday, September 6.
June 14 - The Royal Bank of Scotland Scottish schoolgirls' individual championships was played over the Murrayshall courses, Perth. Clare-Marie Carlton, a 17-year-old pupil at St Andrews High, Paisley, had scores of 76 and 73 for 149. She took the title by one shot from Rachael Livingstone, with Amanda Edwards third on 151 after a card countback with Pamela Pretswell (South Lanarkshire), also on 151. May 30th - MCLGA was pleased that the match previously played against The Lothians Golf Association every two years was revived. Four, two-ball foursomes games were played at Turnhouse, under handicap. Claire Hargan and Belinda Murphy played some sparkling sub-par golf to beat Keith Nicholson and Stephen Lamb 3/2; while the tables were turned in the second match where Craig Neilson and Alistair Love were well under par in beating Jane Flucker and Claire MacDonald. Michael Burnett and Stuart George just managed to win against Rachael Livingstone and Jane Turner and David Warner and Allan Shaw proved too strong a combination against Amanda Edwards and Hilary Laughland.(Results)
May 28th - A match was played against Captain Keith Clark's team at Mortonhall Golf Club. The MCLGA Squad players appreciated the opportunity to play Mortonhall Golf Course and were well entertained with a very good meal after the game. The golf was excellent and included a number of birdies and eagles. The Mortonhall Team proved just too strong on this occasion and came through to win by three games to two. Hopefully we will be able to turn the tables next year!(Results)
May 25th - Janet Hamblin and Gilly Glen of Craigmillar Park set the pace at the Midlothian County Ladies Midsummer Foursomes and Commonwealth Spoons Qualifying Competition at Liberton today. Their 79 less (15), net 64, was the best scratch and net score. The course was in good condition and 14 players had net scores of 70 or under. (Results)
May 22nd - A great week has just finished at Prestwick at the Scottish Women's (Close) Amateur Championship. Anne Laing won the championship for the fourth time beating, Claire Queen by two holes in a close and exciting final with superb golf from both players. Midlothian was well represented in the tournament with 25 players in the field of 121. Highlights for MCLGA members in the qualifying included a hole in one at the 11th by Kim Horne (Dalmahoy) in her excellent score of 81 in the first round, and a 77 by Louise Fraser (Kingsknowe) in the second round (SS 75 and CSS 78 for both qualifying rounds). Fiona de Vries, Louise Fraser, Claire Hargan, Tracy Laughland and Belinda Murphy were among the 32 qualifiers for the main championship. Claire met the defending champion, Anne Laing in the first round, and all five MCLGA members had very tough first round ties which they did not survive. Kirsten Blackwood and Jane Flucker were among the 16 qualifiers for the consolation event, the Clark Rosebowl. Kirsten lost at the 19th in the first round and Jane at the 17th in the second round. Congratulations to everyone who played on a very difficult course.
May 15th - Draw for the Commonwealth Spoons/Midsummer Foursomes Competition to be held on Tuesday May 25th 2004 at Liberton (Draw)
May 7th - The annual County Squad practice match was played against a Duddingston Team at Duddingston Golf Club, in sunny conditions. All the games were played in competitive but friendly spirit. Midlothian came out the winners, having greatly enjoyed the 'banter' and the hospitality offered by Duddingston.(Results)
May 2nd - Claire Hargan (Prestonfield), won the Midlothian County
Championship for the second time today over Newbattle Golf Course when she beat
Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse) by 3&2 in the Final. Claire won the first with a
par 4, but then lost her tee-shot at the second, where Kirsten had a 3 and squared
the match.. Kirsten won the third with a 3 to go one up. Claire then won the 5th
with a 4 to square the match and went one up at the 8th with a birdie 2, The 9th
was halved in 4, then Claire went ahead at the 10th with a 4 to Kirsten's 5. The
11th and 12th holes were halved with birdie and par 3s. Claire was bunkered after
her pitch at the 13th and Kirsten won hole with a birdie 4 to bring the deficit
back to one hole. At the 14th Claire had a birdie 3 to win the hole and go back
to 2 up. She won the 15th with a par 4 and the match finished at the 16th as the
hole was halved in 5 and Claire won by 3/2. There were 9 birdies between the two
players and the best ball was six under fours.

In the morning semi-finals Claire Hargan finished with birdies at the 13th and 14th to beat Karen Marshall (Baberton) by 5/4. Fiona de Vries (St Rule) had been out in 4 under par to be 5 up, but Kirsten Blackwood held on and gradually reduced the deficit and squared the match at the 16th with a birdie 3. The 17th and 18th holes were halved, with Kirsten winning through at the 19th.
| B Championship In the B Championship Jill Ireland (Newbattle) beat Pam Townsend (Murrayfield). In a tightly contested match, Jill had never been up. She squared the match at the 17th when Pam lost her second shot. The 18th and 19th holes were halved and Jill then holed a put to win at the 20th. Maureen Gardner and Mary Richardson (both Craigmillar Park) were the beaten semi-finalists |
April 30th - County Championship Match-Play (Photo File) - The Semi Finals of the 2004 County Championship will be contested by the first four qualifiers- Karen Marshall, leading qualifier will play Claire Hargan, the defending champion; and Fiona de Vries, last year's beaten finalist will play Kirsten Blackwood, the no 2 qualifier (0 am on Sunday May 2nd).
There were a number of very closely contested ties in the Championship and the B Championship first rounds at the Midlothian County Ladies Championship at Newbattle. Karen Marshall, the leading qualifier was taken to the 19th hole, as was the defending Champion, Claire Hargan. In the afternoon Quarter Finals the defending champion Claire Hargan had a good win, and Fiona de Vries, runner up in 2004, having been well up, was brought back to all square and taken to the 17th hole. Two of the Scottish Seniors Team, Pamela Williamson and Noreen Fenton, just failed to win their ties. Pamela lost at the 19th to Karen Marshall, and Noreen at the 17th to Kirsten Blackwood.

April 27th - The MCLGA Championship Qualifying Competition (36 holes) was played at Newbattle Golf Course. Those tee-ing off first had the worst of the conditions. Luckily the rain eased off and allowed 36 holes to be played. Karen Marshall (Baberton) headed the qualifiers with 150 (76 74) and wins the Robertson Salver. Kirsten Blackwood (Glencorse) was second with 151 (79 72), Fiona de Vries (St Rule) took third place with 152 (76 76), and Claire Hargan (Prestonfield) was fourth on 155 (79 76). The knock-out match play will also be held at Newbattle on Friday April 30th along with the knock-out match play for the B Championship (tee-off times from 9 am and 2 pm ), with the semi-finals and final on Sunday May 2nd (10 am and 3 pm). April 25th - The
annual practice match against Lanarkshire County Ladies was played on a beautiful
sunny day. at Mortonhall. The matches were all close and went to the 17th or 18th
green. Lanarkshire managed to pull through with 2.5 games to Midlothian's 1.5.
Well done Lanarkshire.

April 18th - The Cuthbertson Cup was played at the Glen Golf Course on Sunday April 18th 2004. Midlothian Girls played very well, but unfortunately the opposition proved just too strong (Results)
April 13th - MCLGA Spring Meeting (Results). Elizabeth Simpson (Murrayfield) won the Cormack Salver for the best Scratch score at the Spring Meeting at The Braids No 1 with a score of 81. The best net overall score came from Nancy Lickrish (Dalmahoy) who had a net 73. The weather was fine, although there was a strong breeze and the competitors found the greens very difficult. The CSS went up by 3 strokes to 75 and the Competition was Reduction Only.
April 7th - MCLGA held an informal get together for girls who are just starting to play golf. Eleven girls and their parents attended at the Hermitage Children's Golf Club, Braid Hills Drive, Edinburgh and tried out Snag-Golf.. Sheila Lamb (Clubgolf East Regional Manager) and Mike Clarke (Hermitage Golf Club) were on hand to provide help and advice.(Photos)

March 28th - Midlothian Ladies welcomed the Borders Ladies for the Midlothian's first county squad practice match of the season. The teams played greensomes in a strong westerly wind. The match was halved. The Junior Girls played a match which was also halved. Well played both teams. (Results)
March 28th - Congratulations to Janet Hamblin & Gilly Glen (Craigmillar Park) who beat Rita Dee and Mary Davidson (Kingsknowe) in the Final of the MCLGA Winter Fouromes.
MCLGA is holding an informal get together for girls who are beginning to play golf on Wednesday April 7th 2004 from 10 am to 1 pm at the Hermitage Children's Golf Club, Braid Hills Drive, Edinburgh. Anyone who wishes to come along and see this new venture and try out Scotland's new clubgolf introductory game is welcome. Bring your friends and your parents. There is no charge.
Cuthbertson Cup Team for 2004. Amanda Edwards (Liberton), Sarah Heron (Lothianburn), Rachael Livingstone (Musselburgh Old), Jane Turner (Glencorse) who will play for the County in matches against teams from East Lothian, Fife, Stirling and Clackmannan. The Competition will be held at The Glen Golf Course on Sunday April 18th 2004 with tee-off times of 9.45 am and 2.30 pm. We hope that some of you will be able to come along and support our team.
A Girls Social Evening - was held at Kingsknowe Golf Club on Monday March 22nd 2004 Those who attended took part in a putting competition, anwered a quizz on the Rules of Golf and generally enjoyed themselves.

January 31st - The first short-game coaching session was held for members of the County Squad at King's Acre. The weather was miserable. However all those who attended said that they benefitted from the coaching and the session. Let's hope that the weather is better for the next one!

| October 22nd - Congratulations to Claire Hargan, our County Champion, who has been given Honorary Membership of Dumbarton and Argyllshire County in recognition of her contributions to county, national and international golf. Claire had a long association with D&A before transferring to MCLGA at the beginning of 2003, as she now lives and works in Edinburgh. Fiona Cowan, the D&A Captain said that the honour was given not just for Claire's golf prowess, but because of her whole personality and the example she set others. | ![]() |
