Again, if you would like to attend, please let Kate know when you return your sbscriptions or contact the Captain. February will see the start of the 9-hole competition which will run until August.

Edinburgh didn't know what hit it yesterday, when 177 Midlothian members and guests descended on the Roxburghe Hotel for a luncheon to celebrate the centenary of the County Association.

Many people got there early so as not to miss any of the fun, and they were not disappointed. County Captain Tracy Laughland welcomed guests from the neighbouring counties, East Lothian, Fife and Stirling and Clackmannan, as well as MCLGA sponsors, Jill Dumayne from The Ladies Golf Centre and Ian Young from the Braid Hills Driving Range. The guest list also included representatives of the Scottish Universities Golfing Society, against whom Midlothian have played in an annual match since 1930.

Before lunch Centenary Chairman, Gillian Kirkwood, set the scene with a description of the start of the Midlothian County club, Past President, Sue Caton said Grace and the assembled company tucked in to a delicious meal.

During the meal a prize draw for a round with friends at Archerfield, donated by Ian Young, was won by Past Captain, Elizabeth Rose, who had journeyed from her home near Aboyne to be present.

The speeches after lunch were not short of sensational.

The toast to the Game of Golf was given by Helen Faulds, a Past Captain and Past President of Dunbartonshire and Argyll County LGA. Her humourous and witty speech was interupted by a fire alarm, which only added to the occasion as doors to George Street were opened and 177 lightly dressed people trooped out onto the street on a bitterly cold Edinburgh afternoon. Spirits were high and everyone remained cheerful... it gave some another chance to have a chin-wag with long-lost friends. After about 15 minutes the all-clear was given and the company resumed their seats... Helen carried on as if nothing had happened and, at its conclusion, her scintillating speech received a standing ovation.

Janet Wake, Executive Director of the SLGA, and a past Captain of Midlothian, had a hard act to follow. Her well thought out reply, with her theme of Burns at its centre, was appreciated by the audience.

Nigel Watt, Past Captain of the Scottish Univerities Golfing Society toasted the Midlothian County Ladies Golf Association, and regaled the company with some of the history of the annual fixture between MCLGA and SUGS, in particlar mentioning some of the personalities who played and some of the funny stories from the match that he remembered.

Margaret Rodgers, President of MCLGA, replied and also added some of her own reminiscences to the occasion. Camaraderie and friendship were the themes that ran through all the speeches, and the audience certainly appreciated the efforts of all the speakers.

Who would be more appropriate to have the last word than Ethel Jack, current President of the SLGA, and a Past Champion, Captain and President of Midlothian? True to form, and in her own inimitable way, Ethel gave a Vote of Thanks that was truly memorable. The County Secretary, Agnes Leslie and Past Captain, Margaret McPherson, were particularly mentioned as instrumental to the success of the event.

The event eventually finished at the Roxburghe at 4:30 pm.

Reports of an invasion of middle-aged women to Tiger Lilys with Baberton and Kingsknowe competing to see who would be the last to leave in the small hours, have not been exaggerated. [I've been asked to point out that not every-one was middle-aged.... there were some younger members there!]

Junior Girls Brave the Cold

In freezing cold, blustery conditions, the Junior Training Squad turned out for their first coaching session of 2009 with Mark Berrie at the Braid Hills Driving Range. This year, the squad has been divided into two groups which each have a 45-min coaching session. The girls seemed to enjoy the session and the smaller group format. Our thanks to Mark for his time this morning.

As well as the coaching, 6 girls braved the weather for the monthly 9-holes round the Princes Course. We were thankful that it stayed sunny and the sleet did not come until after they had all finished but a lot of jumping and running around was needed to keep warm. Despite all of this, the girls all played really well and hit some fantastic shots. The general feeling was that more putting practice was required! My thanks to May Hardy for organinsing today and to Claire MacDonald for her help. The results were:

Handicap:
Heather Laing net 46.5

Non-handicap:
1st Carys Hardy 62
2nd Caitlin Turner 63
3rd Emma Morrison 67

Congratulations to Heather and Carys!

Remember the Princes Course league starts next month and runs until August. Points are awarded for turning up, for the handicap winner and for 1st, 2nd and 3rd non-handicap place. So come along and join in!

Pre-season Squad Training

As with the Junior Training Squad, pre-season training has been set up for the County Squad. A couple of friendly matches amongst themselves have been set, one in January and another in February. Jane Connachan has once again agreed to give short game coaching sessions, these being held between February and March at Musselburgh Old Golf Course. Along with the juniors, the squad members will be put through their paces in February with a rules night devised by Mary and Linda, and Scott Dixon at Dalmahoy Golf and Country Club will hold a "Train your Golf Brain" coaching session at the end of March. As the season gets underway, we have a variety of practice matches against the Borders Ladies at The Hirsel Golf Club on Sunday 15th March, the Lanarkshire Ladies at Strathaven Golf Club on Sunday 24th May, Duddingston Men on Friday 29th May, and the SUGS at Gullane Golf Club on Friday 5th June.

It is hoped that the Squad will enjoy and benefit from the training which has been set up and it will stand them in good stead for the Inter-County Jamboree which is being held, this year, at Falkirk (Carmuirs) from Monday 29th June to Wednesday 1st July.

Junior Coaching

Coaching for the MCLGA junior girls has again been arranged for this coming year. This will be held at the Braid Hills Driving Range under the tutelage of Iain Young and his fellow Professionals. Coaching will be in 1-hour sessions from 10am - 1 pm, and will take place on the first Sunday of each month (except January 2010, when it will be held on the 10th). Due to the decrease in numbers experienced during the holiday season, we have decided to omit the summer months of July and August this year and to run two 5-block sessions instead. The first of these will run from February to June, inclusive, with the second running from September to January, inclusive. We are very grateful to Sharon MacPherson and Suzie Laughland who have agreed to oversee these coaching days on our behalf.

The girls are also welcome to try out their golf skills on a golf course. 9-Holes of golf are arranged for the juniors on the third Sunday of each month (January to November inclusive) at the Princes Golf Course, the next date being the 18th January at 10.30 am. This is aimed to allow the girls to learn the rules and etiquette of the game of golf, as well as to introduce them to new friends. A competition is held from February to August, with prizes available for both the overall handicap and non-handicap winners. The November 9-hole competition is an adult/junior competition, where the girls have an opportunity to impress their adult partners! Once again, we are very grateful to May Hardy, who has kindly agreed to oversee these 9-hole competitions.

Further details on the above will be available with the subscription notices, which have recently been sent out.

Karen Marshall has agreed to continue to oversee the Junior Training Squad and, with her experience and enthusiasm, we hope that the girls will enjoy their year and will benefit from everything that has been arranged. We are also delighted that Kate and Hannah have been invited to join the SLGA Junior Performance Squad, which we hope they will enjoy.

This year, the County has arranged further coaching for the squad at the Braid Hills Driving Range, under the watchful eye of Mark Berrie. Sessions will take place on Sunday 18th January and Sunday 15th February, with a further session on the 22nd March involving on course coaching round the 9-hole Princes Golf Course. As well as this, a rules/social evening has been arranged, together with the main squad, on Thursday 5th February, where our Vice-Captain, Mary, and selector, Linda, will put the squads to the test! A "Train your Golf Brain" coaching session will be held at Dalmahoy Golf Club under the auspices of Scott Dixon on Monday 30th March, again with the main squad, and practice matches have been arranged between the MCLGA Junior Training Squad and both the Borders (Sunday 15th March at The Hirsel Golf Club) and Lanarkshire (Sunday 24th May at Strathaven Golf Club) Junior Squads.

Good luck, girls. We hope 2009 is a good year for you all and you all enjoy your golf.
